Updated 24 October 2026 · rules checked against the official sources cited
TEF Canada writing has two sections: section A (25 minutes) asks you to finish a news article in at least 80 words; section B (35 minutes) asks for a letter to the newspaper of at least 200 words, with at least three arguments. CCI official sample · CCI — TEF Canada
Each example on this page starts from an original prompt written for this site following the official format: these are not past exam topics. The levels are teaching targets (estimated NCLC), not official marks.
One prompt, two answers annotated sentence by sentence
Each page: the prompt, an answer targeting an estimated NCLC around 7 and another at 9–10, a note on every sentence, word counts and 3 edits to move up a level.
Section A (the rest of a news story, at least 80 words, in several paragraphs)
Section B (a letter to the newspaper, at least 200 words, with at least three arguments)
One level up: one edit per example
First the sentence from the NCLC 7 answer, then the improved version. The other edits are on each page.
Comme le chien restait calme, il a continué son trajet et il a prévenu le centre de contrôle par radio.
→ Rassuré par le calme de l'animal, le chauffeur a poursuivi son trajet tout en prévenant le centre de contrôle par radio.Repeating “le chauffeur” makes the referent explicit; the gerund avoids repeating “il a” and presents the actions as simultaneous. — Section A, a dog on the bus
L'étudiant, Thomas Gagnon, s'est excusé plusieurs fois et a proposé de faire visiter l'appartement aux deux jeunes femmes en même temps.
→ L'étudiant, Thomas Gagnon, s'est excusé à plusieurs reprises avant de proposer aux deux jeunes femmes une visite commune de l'appartement.“à plusieurs reprises” and “avant de proposer” vary the syntax; “une visite commune” is more concise than “faire visiter… en même temps”. — Section A, two viewers for one room
Un collègue a ensuite interrogé les commerces voisins.
→ Un collègue a ensuite fait le tour des commerces voisins, muni d'une photo du chat. The phrase “faire le tour de” and the participle “muni de” make the search concrete and the syntax richer. — Section A, a cat at the trades workshop
D’abord, le prix peut décourager les sorties en transport collectif.
→ D’abord, le coût des billets peut freiner les sorties en transport collectif, notamment lorsqu’on voyage à plusieurs.A more precise subject (“le coût des billets”), a vivid verb (“freiner”) and a targeted clause with “notamment lorsqu’on” make the argument more concrete. — Section B, free public transit at weekends
Je ne suis pas d'accord avec cette idée, et je voudrais vous expliquer pourquoi.
→ Je ne suis pas d'accord avec cette idée, car elle me semble ignorer plusieurs réalités du travail quotidien.Instead of announcing “je voudrais vous expliquer pourquoi”, the sentence already gives the main reason: from the introduction, the reader knows what the letter will argue. — Section B, full-time remote work
Je suis d'accord avec cette idée, car beaucoup d'objets peuvent encore servir après un premier propriétaire.
→ Je suis d'accord avec cette idée, car beaucoup d'objets restent utilisables après avoir appartenu à quelqu'un d'autre. The rewrite preserves the agreement and makes the idea of reuse explicit; the past infinitive “après avoir appartenu” varies the syntax. — Section B, buying second-hand
